Markets update

On the markets at 9:50 a.m. (ET):In Toronto, the S&P/TSX composite index was down 14.64 points to 14,937.69.The Dow Jones industrial average was down 13.78 points to 21,660.73.The Standard & Poor’s 500 index was up a 0.27 of a point to 2,425.82.The Nasdaq composite index was up 3.52 points to 6,220.04.The Canadian dollar was trading at 79.55 cents US, up from Friday’s average price of 79.45 cents US.

Prime Minister shocked by attacks in France

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a note to French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, said that he was deeply shocked and saddened by the unprecedented and dastardly terrorist attacks in Paris on 13 November 2015 which resulted in the loss of a large number of innocent lives and injury and trauma to many more.“Having suffered due to terrorism for many decades, Sri Lanka unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Attacks of this nature clearly indicate the urgent need for concerted measures by the global community to combat terrorism and extremism,” the Prime Minister said. He said the government and people of Sri Lanka stand in solidarity with the government and people of France during this time of tragic loss and suffering. read more
